—

Flora Yin-Wong is an experimental artist and writer from London whose work incorporates field recordings and early instruments such as singing bowls, yangqin and kemence, processed through pedals, Max/MSP, as well as text-based storytelling and abstraction. She cites early musical influences from the city’s diverse sub-cultures from UK garage to underground DIY bands, having grown up on council estates in Camden, to underage clubbing in Soho and Mayfair.

In October 2020, her debut album was released on Modern Love records as a double LP vinyl. Prior to that, she released on Berlin label PAN on the ambient “mono no aware” compilation which she worked on conceptualizing. Her debut EP “City God” was a tape on New York imprint PTP, was inspired by the Daoist tradition of tutelary deities and the afterlife.

She has performed at institutions and galleries like MACRO Roma, Volksbühne Theatre Berlin, Palais de Tokyo, V&A Museum, Fondation Beyeler Basel, Somerset House, Triennale Milano, King’s Place, The Jazz Cafe, and Cafe OTO London, as well as clubs like Berghain, Printworks London, Razzmatazz Barcelona, SOTO and Metro in Kyoto, and on Festivals like Atonal and 3HD Festivals in Berlin, Semibreve Portugal, FIBER Festival Amsterdam, Wiener Festwochen in Vienna and MUTEK Peru.

She regularly guests on radio shows like Rinse FM, NTS, Know Wave, The Lot Radio, and Boiler Room, with a trimestrial residency on LYL Radio. This year she launched her record label Doyenne feat. artists like Susu Laroche, Lisa Lerkenfeldt, Martyna Basta, and YL Hooi. Her second album is due this September on Modern Love, and her multi-channel composition for Paris institute’s INA GRM will be released as a split EP next year following a residency for their iconic 48-channel diffusion system. She is currently working on remixes for Ale Hop on Nyege Nyege Tapes, for the duo Animistic Beliefs and Tokyo producer Ena.

Her first book “Liturgy” was released in July 2021 on New York’s Primary Information — exploring abstract fiction and non-fiction, interlinking themes like religion, modern mythology, paradoxes, and delusions.

This evening it’s all about the right amount of BumBum. Sometimes, as with Hüma Utku, this BumBum comes across as a complex structure to enable an archetypal experience in C. G. Jung’s sense, which transforms field recordings, acoustic instruments and atmospheric ambience into transcendent harmonic noise and raw ritual rhythms. Other times the BumBum booms through the room as Julia Just mixes haunting drones with pulsating, creaking and reverberating noise to hammer her musical style between post-industrial, dark ambient and electro-acoustic music into the souls of the auditorium. And then there’s this BumBum, with which Captain Mändy & Containa from Hydra transform the dance floor into a slide in best (club) manner, because the sweat flows in streams. Wirtshaus zur Schießhalle is the place to experience it all on 24 November — embedded in the d*sign week 2023 organized by Potato Publishing and servus.at, which takes place from 21 to 26 November (programme at dsignweek.servus.at).

Tickets: pre-sale 12 Euros / box office 15 Euros / pre-sale via KUPFticket.com

Hailing from Istanbul, the Berlin based electronic music composer and sound artist HÜMA UTKU explores the possibilities of how sound textures and rhythm can be used to evoke a sense of ancient within advanced electronic music. With an overall disregard for genres she fuses field recordings, acoustic instruments, atmospheric ambience into harmonious noise and harsh ritualistic rhythms as means to utilize sound and music as tools for storytelling. Combining her practice of music with her studies in psychology Utku’s works draw inspiration from human condition, mysticism and folklore.

In August 2018 “Şeb‑i Yelda” was released by Karl Records, which presented Utku (as R.A.N.) with an evolved sound and strong theme to a wide audience. Following the international success of her EP, she released her debut full-length album under her own name Gnosis in July 2019 via the same label. This release gained Utku recognition for her unique approach of creating sonic story plots by merging concepts with experiments in electronic music. Her sophomore album “The Psychologist” was released on Editions Mego in May 2022. This album has been cited as Utku’s most ambitious, authentic and complex work yet in which her background in psychology and her current practice as a conceptual music composer are intertwined.

Since 2016, Utku has presented her work in festivals and institutions including Berlin Atonal, CTM Club Transmediale Festival Berlin, Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, Radialsystem in Berlin, Salon IKSV in Istanbul, Donaufestival in Krems, Musikprotokoll in Graz, Sonic Acts Biennale in Amsterdam, Lunchmeat Festival in Prague, Insomnia Festival in Tromsø and many others. Her work has received notable press from platforms such as The Wire, Noisey, Rolling Stone, Redbull Music, Groove Mag, Gonzo Circus, BantMag, Scene Noise among others, as well as getting broadcasted by seminal radio station and platforms such as BBC Radio 3, ORF, TRT, NTS radio, RAI 3, Resonance FM, YLE and Sveriges Radio. In 2021, Utku was selected as a SHAPE artist (Sound, Heterogeneous Art and Performance in Europe).—

Julia Just’s work explores the idiosyncratic electronic soundworld of haunted drones, pulses, creaks, and reverberations. The Vienna-based artist deploys field recordings alongside granular synthesis and various digital FX chains via a modular setup – but the result is consistently surprising and mired in a deep sense of darkness. Abstract journeys from the intersection of post-industrial, dark-ambient and electroacoustic music.
Her latest appearances include Unsafe+Sounds Festival, Sonic Territories Festival, Venster99, l i c c h t and Château Rouge (all in Vienna).—

Lorena Höllrigl and Amanda Augustin are part of the Linz-based art & cultural initiative Hydra. The many-headed creature fights day and night for the subculture in Linz and all over the world. Hydra’s homebase is at Raumteiler Linz and once a year the collective is curating and programming an event called Holy Hydra at a church in Linz. As Captain Mändy & Containa, the two deliver DJ sets between spherical sounds and hard beats, always with a dignified level of bumbum.

Noise at the highest level. On November 10, the Wirtshaus zur Schießhalle will host three artists who are constantly on the lookout for new musical connections between experimental electronical, industrial, metal and noise music. qujOchÖ is pleased to announce that Yuko Araki will be making a stop in Linz on her extensive European tour. She will be supported on this evening with a live set by Stefan Tiefengraber and a DJ set by Moritz Morast, both of whom have been connected to the Linz music scene for many years through many corners (including Tresor Linz, Mit Händen und Füßen, …).

Tickets pre-sale: 10 Euro (–> pre-sale via KUPFticket.com)
Tickets box office: 13 Euro

YUKO ARAKI is one of a number of young female artists emerging from Japan that are redefining the outer boundaries of noise, post-industrial techno and experimental electronics. Raised as a pianist, Araki’s teenage obsession with metal opened a gateway towards various types of intense sonics. Exploring a diverse range music projects over the past decade (KUUNATIC, Concierto de la Familia), her solo work resolved in 2019 after she developed an approach to analog freeform analog noise, releasing her first EP “I” (Gerpfast Collective) and her debut album “II” (Commando Vanessa). Working with a reductive set of tools, her methodology was to create work that created a sense of timbral intensity and complexity through a weaving together of competing elements.

These days her new album “IV” is released on Room40, on which Araki creates a wholly more bludgeoning sound world. Working at the nexus of ritual, noise, sub sonics and crushing rhythms, her latest recording is resolutely embodied, smothering the listener in undulating pressure waves. She also summons an altogether otherworldly approach to voice, which operates as fugitive spirits within their caustic, post-industrial sound spaces she composes. This interest in voice is accentuated with special contributions from guests including Endon’s Taichi Nagura.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4haKiAYkhI

STEFAN TIEFENGRABER’S work ranges from kinetic sound installations to audio-video noise performances. He experiments with the modification of devices, which are originally manufactured for different purposes. Combined with the perception of the audience, this experimental attempt of exploring old and new materials leads him to new and unpredictable results. For example, in the noise performance DOWM he uses three walkmans, three effect pedals, two mixers, a mini-synthesizer, microphones and several feedback loops to create a noise-scape that ends in silence and emptiness. In this project, Tiefengraber refers to his artistic method of working, which he implements not only in performances but also in his installation projects. He extends the predefined functions of the used devices by experimenting with them and using unconventional applications. With this way he achieves new and unpredictable results.

Tiefengraber’s work has been exhibited at Japan Media Arts Festival 2021 (Tokyo/Japan), Galerie gerken (Berlin/Germany), Ars Electronica Festival (Linz/Austria), TodaysArt 2014 (Den Haag/Netherlands), New Media Gallery (Vancouver/Canada), 16th Media Art Biennale WRO 2015 (Wroclaw/Poland), Blaues Rauschen (Bochum/Germany) and many more.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEABdNrcPSA

MORITZ MORAST is a musician and artist currently residing in Vienna, Austria. In his works he explores musical systems through improvisational immediacy and playful spontaneity, unraveling their idiosyncrasies and self-organizing properties, organizing raw sounds into a fluid form of motion. He works solo, as well as in different formations, ranging from free improvisation, extreme metal, and avant-rock, to experimental electronics.

Morast also composes for dance, theater, films and virtual reality. His musical work has been showcased on Festivals like Ars Electronica (Austria), Donaufestival Krems (Austria), Ars Musica (Belgium) and Meme Festival (Spain).

qujOchÖ restarts its concert machine after moving from Untere Donaulände to the former Wirtshaus zur Schießhalle in Waldeggstraße (close to the train station, only about 12 minutes by tram line 3 or 4 from Hauptplatz to Untergaumberg stop). In the still raw atmosphere of the renovation, the first act to perform will be industrial gabber and new school hardcore by ASTRID GNOSIS (ES/GB), who has been seen in recent years at Hyperreality 2019 at the Sophienalpe in Vienna, at Club Transmediale Festival 2020 in Berlin or at the Unsafe+Sounds 2022 at Werk in Vienna. Afterwards, the global local support act LYNNMAYYA (SY/AT), whose fine minimal deep techno sets have been haunting the clubs in Linz for some time now, will perform.

“Astrid Gnosis is one of those rare, one-of-a-kind artists whose work leaves a lasting impression on your mind. She throws you into a deeply unsettling universe, both uncomfortably perturbing yet weirdly engrossing. Colombian/Spanish-born and London-based, Gnosis is a multi-media artist who weaves dystopian soundscapes, blunt lyricism and brutal imagery to challenge human perception. When it comes to Gnosis’ hybrid hardcore sound, there’s no sugar-coating and no pretentious nonsense, only progressive and uncompromising electronica with a socio-political tinge, designed to rip out humanity’s obliviousness to the world one beat at a time.” (Silvija Daniunaite, subbacultcha.be)

“LynnMayya is a Syrian experimental visualist and sound artist who kicked started her career as a bassist in a rock band called Karma and they performed in Syria as the first female rock band in the country. Now she is based in Austria where she performs as a Techno DJ & Electronic Producer. In her DJ and live sets she plays lots of tracks, combining groovy minimal with dark-psy twist. As producer she is distinguished by using raw and playful synths and other digital and analog instruments.”
