The former Wirtshaus zur Schießhalle opens its doors after months of renovation — with a line-up that equals a one-day festival, workshops on riso and matrix printing, coffee & cake, raffle and much more.

From 6 to 11 June 2023, LINZ FMR, the biennial festival for art in digital contexts and public spaces, will take place for the third time. After the first edition in March 2019 alongside the Danube river and the second edition in June 2021 around the train station Mühlkreisbahnhof, this time FMR 23 will transform the southern harbour area into a freely accessible art space by numerous artists.

Opening

The opening will take place on Tuesday, 6 June 2023 at 6 pm at the clubhouse of Kleingartenverein Linz-Ost – one of the festival’s venues alongside hello yellow Velodrom & Pumptrack, Linzer Stadtalm or Klimaoase Linz-Lustenau.

The program also includes lectures and artist talks on topics such as ephemeral circuits, wild computing, detoxing digitality and chromatic fermentation. Performances from the field of electronic music will be offered in addition to the Opening Night at a Concert Night on Friday, 9 June, with Stefano D’Alessio (IT), Crystn Hunt Akron feat. Tofa (Modulux) (AT), Floating Spectrum feat. Organisation

Responsible for the festival is the association „LINZ FMR – art in digital contexts and public spaces“. It was founded by the two art and cultural initiatives qujOchÖ and servus.at, Atelierhaus Salzamt of the City of Linz, University of Arts Linz and Sturm und Drang Galerie. Their representatives have been involved in the conception, organization and curation of the festival since its first edition in March 2019.

Bibi Finster
Bibi lives and works as an artist in Austria. She produces and mixes her compositions herself. Her brother-in-law, Philipp Finster, accompanies her on bass. The sounds move between electronic beats, looped guitars, field recordings, lots of voice and even more bass. 

Quatsch mit Sosa
Quatsch mit SoSa are Sonja Kuzmics and Sarah Maria Schmidt. They have been making songs from found lyrics, melodies for limber ears and beats for loose stomping and swaying legs since 2018. The audience is invited to doodle on their hat-shaped eggheads throughout the performance via Windows Paint projection.

At the invitation of “Interuniversitäre Einrichtung Wissenschaft und Kunst” (Inter-University Institution for Science and Art), a collaboration between Paris Lodron University and the Mozarteum University, qujOchÖ is coming to Salzburg with MYTH OF THEUTH. As part of the W&K forum “Artistic play spaces as participatory places of learning?”, after a round of games, the possibilities and limits of using games to promote participation and impart knowledge will be discussed in a panel discussion. 

MYTH OF THEUTH is a playful exploration of media theories from ancient history to the present day. While walking through ancient Athens, up to seven people gather different media and get in touch with media-philosophical celebrities from the ancient world to the present. Vilém Flusser drives aside the telematic society ad nauseam, Laura Mulvey takes a joyful look at our memory and Marshall McLuhan finally gets his well-deserved massage. Smartphones, newspapers, Lego bricks, sleeping masks, stamps, liqueur and other media are used through twelve unique stations.

The second edition of FMR, the biennial festival for art in digital contexts and public spaces, will take place from June 1 to 6, 2021. After the first edition along Linz’s Donaulände, this time the area around Linz’s Mühlkreisbahnhof will be transformed by numerous international and local artists into an open and freely accessible exhibition space. There will also be a program lasting several days with a symposium, artist talks, guided tours and concerts.

Titles like these helped shape the artistic resistance against fascism in the 1920s and 1930s. In numerous satirical magazines, illustrators, poets and writers fought with their means against the political insanity that drew broad sections of the population to its side in the interwar period from November 1918 to September 1939. In Europe, this insanity manifested itself particularly in Austrofascism under Dollfuß and Schuschnigg, in Italian fascism under Mussolini, in Spanish fascism under Primo de Rivera and Franco, and in National Socialism under Hitler.

qujOchÖ has taken this as a starting point for an examination of this specific form of resistance and a transformation into the present time. Together with artist friends, we followed the traces of Olaf Gulbransson, Ragnvald Blix, Franziska Bilek & Co., but also of illustrators, poets and writers, many of whom have fallen into oblivion.

Some of the satirical journals that appeared in the interwar period have been digitized and made freely accessible in recent years, for example with the Heidelberg Historical Collections at the University of Heidelberg or the online edition of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, the Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach and the RWTH Aachen. In addition, exhibition catalogues and scientific texts dedicated to the satire of these years were published. qujOchÖ has worked through this material and used it as a basis for the production of its own satirical magazine entitled “The grinning penguin”. Subtitle: “Satire for the 20s”. A total of three issues of the magazine have been published with a circulation of 7,500 copies, printed in full Berlin format with 8 pages in color. They have been distributed in Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg and Innsbruck, among other places, and are now presented to the interested public in an unique overall view, including lectures, readings, music and a buffet appropriate to the time.
