Join us for a very special event at Zoo Linz!

qujOchÖ explores the connections between animal, human and artificial intelligence in a six-hour foray. Artistic works on parrots and Alexa, the Codex Seraphinianus and the Kafkaesque “A Report to an Academy” meet contributions to animal psychology from 1912, read by Dominika Meindl and the three donkeys Jolly, Fejalema & Biggi. In addition, there will be a zoological tour with assistant zoo director Melanie Saxinger, exploring the question of animal intelligence, and a lecture by Theresa Rössler from the Goffin Lab at the Messerli Research Institute at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna.

The grand finale will then take place on the petting zoo stage with two live concerts. Elvin Brandhi is “an improvising lyricist, producer and sound artist from Bridgend, Wales, who builds aberrant beats from field recordings, tape, vinyl, instrument and voice.” (SHAPE Platform) Recently she performed at festivals like LINZ FMR (2019), Sonic Acts Academy Amsterdam (2020), Donaufestival Krems (2021), Club Transmediale (2022), Supersonic Birmingham (2023) or Atonal Berlin (2023). Support comes from OGDL (Gundega Graudina, Ozan Tezvaran), two musicians around the Tangible Music Lab at Art University Linz.

Sequential events and teasers present vehicles of multidimensional crises in assemblage-like settings.

The individual episodes are brought together in this Zine as the season finale, a photographically documented process forming a conceptual parcours of puzzles.

The episodes originally and sporadically “aired” as real life events or in virtual ways, combining exhibition, intervention and photo shooting, at the same time accompanying the collective along the process of changing their location of work. This way the series went along three seasons, from 2020 to 2022.

Escape-room-meets-all-crises-in-this-world, wondering if the telephone joker will provide the decisive clue…?

In the show-kaes El Queso, qujOchÖ and friends research the true nature of the “Cacio e Pepe”, through an artistic exploration of the pale-yellow-to-intensely-coloured-mirabellic substance.
A series of Käs-studies, double-blind experiments and radical research processes on the essence of the Käsessenz will be the main course of the evening.

El Queso

For millions of years, man thought the moon was made of cheese. In 1969, we went there and discovered it was made of rock. We haven’t been back since.

The facets of cheese are as diverse as its variety; they combine culture with science, economics with chemistry, craftsmanship with politics. In a good cheese, every hole, no matter how small, is filled with stories and History. From soft to hard, young to old, mild to spicy – there is a cheese for every occasion.

Cheese is a mysterious matter that solves any polarization. In its creation process, the denaturation of a colloidal fat-water emulsion — better known as milk – frees up the radical tension between its two unmixable components. An alchemic processes finds a new delicate balance. The result is a solid substance that carry its magic properties way beyond its production technique, moulding over various areas of human activity, from art to philosophy.

Already in the time of classical philosophy, Epicurus found out that a single piece of cheese has the property of filling a person more than a whole meal. The obvious question is: which cheese was it? Perhaps the Camembert known for distorting the space-time continuum, the same that initiated Dalì’s “Persistence of Memory”…? Aristoteles had a more fundamental intuition on the aetheric substance of the lunar body, probably only failing to recognising its root withing the lactose matters.

As cheese seems to be fundamentally molten in the essence of everything, only another metaphisically rich substance can keep the pace and serve the quest of the Queso. Recalling the words of the theorist Dino Formaggio – “Art is everything that humans call Art” – it seems that, once again, only Art can save human from complete meltdown.

Stefan Brandmayr selects and put together, he disassembles and organizes, he forms and performs. His approach is always process-oriented. His artistic starting point is never a concept but haptic work combined with research. Brandmayr often deals with pictures of masculinity and connects an analysis of gender roles with basic parameters of contemporary art production. (Gudrin Ratzinger)

Avril Corroon
Avril Corroon is an Irish visual artist based in London. She works with moving image, performance, and sculpture to examine precarious living, inequity and how architecture manifests governance. She has made cheese from toxic black mould in housing, has turned a gallery into a car dealership and covertly filmed labour conditions in her hospitality job. Currently she is working on ‘Got Damp’ a research and development project with TACO Gallery in Thamesmead, exploring qualities of damp housing as both harmful and lively material.

At the invitation of “Interuniversitäre Einrichtung Wissenschaft und Kunst” (Inter-University Institution for Science and Art), a collaboration between Paris Lodron University and the Mozarteum University, qujOchÖ is coming to Salzburg with MYTH OF THEUTH. As part of the W&K forum “Artistic play spaces as participatory places of learning?”, after a round of games, the possibilities and limits of using games to promote participation and impart knowledge will be discussed in a panel discussion. 

MYTH OF THEUTH is a playful exploration of media theories from ancient history to the present day. While walking through ancient Athens, up to seven people gather different media and get in touch with media-philosophical celebrities from the ancient world to the present. Vilém Flusser drives aside the telematic society ad nauseam, Laura Mulvey takes a joyful look at our memory and Marshall McLuhan finally gets his well-deserved massage. Smartphones, newspapers, Lego bricks, sleeping masks, stamps, liqueur and other media are used through twelve unique stations.
