Workshop: Zine Generator
with Mara Karagianni
 

In this workshop we will follow through some python code for creating PDF pamphlets, layouts  and zines. We will look into the PDF libraries FPDF and Borb and work with an extension of the FPDF module to create page layouts, signatures, covers and colophons.

This will be a hands-on workshop, where participants will be introduced to python functions and classes for making custom scripts to generate PDF publications by feeding text and image files to their script. We will start with an overview of specific python libraries that work with PDF format, and we will continue with the zine generator code accessible here. While prior knowledge to python is not required, participants shall be comfortable with using the terminal.

Mara is an artist, developer, tech zinester and python instructor, who regularly muse about culture and foss on mastodon (systerserver.town/@mara) and publish their zines at psaroskalazines.gr. Together with other queer peers, they run the feminist servers anarchaserver & systerserver.

This summer qujOchÖ is building a swamp-screening setup under the chestnut trees in the Wirtshaus garden — of course as usual with a film program that is worth seeing. We cool down the beer, start the popcorn machine and are looking forward to enjoy the specially arranged (mostly English language) short film program with you, only (!) one baby elephant length away from each other.

LINZ FMR is a biennial format for art in digital contexts and public spaces. The first edition will take place at the end of March 2019 in Linz, Austria.

The heart of the format is an exhibition in public and open space with works by international and local artists who deal with art in digital contexts. An education program with different tours and a supporting program with lectures, concerts and discussions will accompany the exhibition, to reflect on new approaches, working methods and developments related to art in digital contexts.

LINZ FMR 19 is curated and organized by the Linz art and cultural initiatives qujOchÖ and servus.at, the Atelierhaus Salzamt, the Department of Cultural Studies of the University of Art and Design Linz and the STURM UND DRANG GALERIE.

For some time now, we have been able to observe how our well-known physical spaces are increasingly superimposed by finely meshed virtual and digital dimensions. In addition to that, we experience spatial limitations and extensions that lead to a multitude of breaks, shifts and distortions in what we commonly understand as reality. Our world of today, shaped by global digitalization, radically redefines the experience of time, body and place, and thus also the experience of art outside of institutional and closed spaces. But what does this mean for society, for art and for spaces?

On Thursday, 22 November 2018, starting at 6 p.m. at the Salzamt Linz, the prologue offers an introduction to this and similar topics, which will be presented in a concentrated form at LINZ FMR 19 at the end of March 2019. The prologue consists of a lecture by Britta Peters (DE), a concert with Miri Kat (UK) and Julia del Río (ES) as well as screenings of the works “DECODING Katy Perry’s Dark Horse (THE WHOLE TRUTH)” by Karin Ferrari (IT/AT), “Fetish Finger” by Susanna Flock (AT), “Need Room” by Isabella Auer (AT) and “My Holy Nacho?” by Bernhard Garnicnig & Jamie Allen (AT/CA).

At the end of March 2019, LINZ FMR 19 will negotiate ephemeral art in digital contexts and public spaces for a few days in Linz, Austria. The format’s core is an exhibition in public and open space with works by international and local artists who deal with art in digital contexts. A supporting program of walks, lectures, films, concerts and discussions will be set up to address new approaches, working methods and developments in connection with art in digital contexts.

LINZ FMR is curated and organised by the two Linz based art and cultural initiatives qujOchÖ and servus.at, the Atelierhaus Salzamt, the Department of Cultural Studies at the University of Art Linz and the STURM UND DRANG GALERIE. qujOchÖ invites you to a mysterious gathering around 66 conspiracies. In a vacant apartment of a recently deceased propulsion engineer near voestalpine the man’s legacy has been inspected, sorted and prepared.

On Saturday November 25 the apartment will be opened for exactly 66 hours for eager spectators. In the rooms one can find numerous hints to past and actual conspiracies. Is the earth flat? Who really murdered Marilyn Monroe? Was the moon landing just a big hoax? Is the Republic of Austria, in reality, just an enterprise? How harmful are chemtrails? Is Möllemann still alive? Why are there hidden messages on cigarette packages?

On the opening evening president Dominika Meindl will convey an excessive welcoming message to the gathered people. The Austrian artist Karin Ferrari will uncover hidden messages in news programs during a live conference with the news studio in Paris and Georgie Gold as “The Golden Asshole” plays a sentimental DJ-tribute-set to Sir Paul McCartney, who died in 1966.

Following on Sunday afternoon a screening marathon on films and documentations about conspiracy theories will start. With pre-Christmas Coca Cola, Jesus Toasts and disinformed beer, served by the presidents of hearts, Donald Trump.

On Monday evening Mag. Mag. Dr. Claus Oberhauser from the University of Innsbruck will take a closer look at different conspiracies from an academic perspective. The evening will be completed with a conspiracist soirée by Johannes Grenzfurthner from the clandestine Viennese group monochrom. The apartment will be closed forever on Tuesday at 2 pm.
